…that pasteurizing the milk that calves drank would drastically improve their overall health.

Prevention is More Profitable than Treatments or Cures

1999

In the fall of 1999, like so many autumn seasons, calf morbidity and mortality were spiking as the weather turned for the worse in Colorado. Disease is the culmination of a taxed immune system that has been confronted by a heavy pathogen burden. In discussion with a progressive dairy client, Dr Richard Dumm wanted to explore the notion of pasteurizing the waste milk being fed to his calves as a way to improve the “groceries” while also decreasing the “bug” load in the food source. Nothing was really available at the time other than $25,000-$50,000 machines.

For this 600 cow dairy, the high price was not an option.

Using a bit of innovative shop work and a quick study of electronic control systems the first prototype was constructed and placed in the parlor. Employees were instructed to open valves based on when certain lights popped on and the equipment had an eerie resemblance to a moonshine still; nonetheless, the results were almost immediate.

  • Calf scours dropped 90%
  • Weight gains were noticeable within days
  • Mortality Rate Plummeted
  • Employees Rejoiced!!!!! Only a few calves to treat compared to a mortality rate that was topping 12%

Dr Rick accomplished more health improvement in 1 month with this machine than had been managed with years of vaccinations, antibiotics and supplementation.

2000

By early 2000, Dairy Tech Incorporated was officially registered as a Colorado corporation and engineers were hired to help transform this machine from a contraption to a piece of equipment. Progress was slow and expensive but not nearly as slow as the educational piece would be. Dr Rick spent the next 4 years educating both his colleagues and dairy producers about the potential benefits.

2003

By 2003 the University of Minnesota had agreed to do a field trial with some farms that were willing to try the equipment. Those compelling results were what really launched the process and opened minds to the possibilities that pasteurization offered.

So we hit the trade show circuit to spread the word.

2006

2006 saw the first colostrum pasteurization trials on a 2500 cow dairy in Colorado. Prior to that it was deemed that colostrum could not be pasteurized. Again, with the aid of Dr Sandra Godden at the University of Minnesota the trials proved that indeed the colostrum was difficult to work with but that the absorbed levels in the blood of the calf far outweighed those fed raw colostrum.

Intrigued yet excited by these conflicting results, further studies were carried out to determine the exact temperatures and times that would yield both a quality product and one that was protected from degradation. During this 10-year period from 2001-2011 Dairy Tech continued to improve upon the designs of the equipment to give them reliability and longevity on the dairy.

We had now become the ONLY company in the world to have proven results in pasteurization of colostrum for cattle.

2010

Further experience showed that our customers were still faced with many opportunities to contaminate the colostrum and in 2010 we launched the Perfect Udder® colostrum management system. By selling the dairymen a scientifically designed, empty aluminum bag, we have armed them with the ability to store, refrigerate, freeze, reheat and feed all from a single bag before discarding the single-use item. The reception of this product has been a pleasant surprise and the bags now push the sales of all other equipment.

With over 3 million bags sold in 2020 alone and a 95% retention rate we have firmly established ourselves as the colostrum and waste milk experts around the world.

2011

Our research proved how important clean, quality colostrum is in the development of a calf’s ability to resist disease. A key component of that colostrum is the amount/number of immunoglobulin proteins it contains.  On many dairies, the frozen or cooled colostrum is placed into buckets of extremely hot  water in an attempt to thaw and warm the product for immediate feeding to a newborn calf. This process risks the integrity of the colostrum often yielding poor or inconsistent results. If the colostrum is too cold, the absorption of important immunoglobulin proteins is decreased. If the product is too hot, the proteins themselves will be damaged and the calf may experience mild burns to the esophagus.

So, how do you protect the delicate proteins that impart the immunity for the calf, and still have colostrum readily available for quick deployment?

Dairy Tech, Inc. developed the MilkWorks™ equipment to address these problems. The frozen vessel of colostrum is placed into the pre-warmed Milkworks™ machine for ideal preparation of the product every time. The unit could be used with either standard 2 quart calf bottles, or with Perfect Udder® 3qt or 4qt colostrum management bags making it versatile for all dairies.

2012

Dairy Tech introduced Oxford Ag. The only products on the market to which you can simply Fill with warm water, Shake, then Feed the calf.

Oxford Ag Products Include:

…All in the Perfect Udder® packaging.

We offer this packaging to a select few other suppliers of colostrum, but they are all “Perfect Udder” brand!

2014

We continued to see improvements in overall calf heath and it became obvious that it was directly connected to the amount and quality of the colostrum calves received. Research suggested that a 2L second feeding of colostrum within 8 – 12 hours of birth may result in improved health and lifetime production benefits for the calf. In 2014, we introduced our 2 Liter Perfect Udder® bag for the second feeding of all calves.

2017

2017 was a busy year for us.

A small calf benefits from a feeding tube with a smaller safety-bulb diameter that not only reduces esophageal irritation, but still resists insertion into its windpipe/trachea. For this reason, Dairy Tech’s research and development team produced an esophageal feeding tube specifically designed for calves weighing less than 66 lbs/30kg.

We can proudly say that we are the only company in the WORLD to introduce a small calf esophageal feeding tube to the market that not only addresses these requirements, but is disposable as well.

Easier on the Calf & Biosecure. Win, win!

We also improved our original Perfect Udder® bag by developing our patented new Center-Seal design.

  • Improves Heat Transfer by 30+%
  • Faster Cooling & Heating
  • Easier to Stack & Store

2019

Our attention was becoming more focused on all aspects of colostrum management. Our other pasteurizers were very good at processing larger volumes of colostrum, but we needed something that was designed specifically for use with our Perfect Udder® bags.

In 2019, Matilda® was born.

She was an immediate hit domestically and internationally. Later that same year, we released our Perfect Udder® App which allowed our customers the ability to interact with Matilda®.

2021

We continue to improve our equipment and technology. This year will introduce our new and improved Colostrum and Milk pasteurizer, Adda™. She will feature a stainless steel enclosure and a swing away, touch screen controller and she will work with our Perfect Udder® App. Our objective remains the same; to kill pathogens, simplify feeding and treating processes to improve bio-security, reduce costs, and improve profits. When dairies can start with healthy calves, they will improve the production of the cows and the overall long-term health of the herd.

Because of our long, successful track record, the scientific community has acknowledged Dairy Tech, Inc. as the “innovative leader” in the wet calf segment of the industry.  We are proud to say they have publicly declared Dairy Tech, Inc.® to be the gold standard. We currently have units on 20+ university/university trial sites and state owned dairies in the US.

Our constant efforts at product perfection and out-of-the-box approach to problem solving has led to very innovative, patented solutions that have radically improved processes and outcomes on the dairy.

Today

Our new building was constructed on the property where we first began manufacturing our pasteurizers. We are fortunate to be able to call this place “Home”. If you are in the neighborhood, stop by and say “hello”. We’d love to see you.

Our Dairy Tech pasteurizer kills the pathogens and the Perfect Udder® ensures we deliver a very healthy, sanitary colostrum product. What an intelligent solution!

Justin Gioletti, Robert Gioletti & Sons Dairy
I am on my second Dairy Tech pasteurizer. My death loss has gone from “too high” to less than 1%. Occasionally I don’t have enough colostrum in the bank so I am forced to use fresh, unpasteurized colostrum and that is the source of my 1%. This pasteurizer and the Perfect Udder® bags are great management tools!
